The Hamburg Temperament tuning was devised for the restored Schnitger organ in St Jakobi, Hamburg. The following table shows the cent values of the scale:
Ab | Eb | Bb | F | C | G | D | A | E | B | F# | C# | G# |
-3.1 | +3.1 | +7.4 | +9.4 | +7.0 | +4.7 | +2.4 | 0 | -2.4 | -4.7 | -7.0 | -5.1 | -3.1 |
Seven fifths on the ‘natural’ keys F-C-G-D-A-E-B-F# are smaller than pure by 1/5 syntonic comma, three fifths are pure (f#-c#, c#-g# and f-bb), the fifth ab-eb is enlarged by 1/5 syntonic comma and the fifth eb-a# is enlarged by 1/10 of a Pythagorean comma.
This temperament has been used in the organs at Greyfriars, Oxford, St Paul’s, Deptford, St Giles-in-the-Fields, and the Chapel of God’s Gift, Dulwich.
